Taking The Throne: Khavari & The Get Money Boyz by Renee’ Hill

Hey Ya’ll, Hey! Back at it again with another review.

Today’s book is Taking The Throne: Khavari & The Get Money Boyz by Renee’ Hill.

Whew. This is a book that might hit close to home for mothers with sons. I found myself getting a little emotional and frustrated while I was reading this, because I have a son, and I pray he doesn’t take this path.

The book’s main character is Khavari, an 18 year old high school graduate with a scholarship to go to Purdue.  Pretty smart guy, with all of the potential to get out the hood and not follow the footsteps of his late father Supreme, a known hood legend that ran the streets before he was gunned down while Khavari’s mother, Jackie, was pregnant with him.

Jackie is more than excited that Khavari has a chance to get out and be somebody, but Khavari has other plans. He wants money NOW, and is tired of seeing his mother struggle just to take care of him, so he devises a plan that will have him and his best friends, Justus and Royal, eating.  That plan works, and quickly catapults them into a lifestyle that they use to dream about; fast money, fast cars, and fast women.  Khavari forms the GMB crew (Get Money Boyz), and decides he will become the smarter, better version of his father.

But you know what they say…more money, more problems. Khavari’s relationship with his mother becomes strained, and we don’t hear from her much after Khavari throws college away. He gets his dream girl, Tiny, but even that comes with issues because of who her brother is, and a life is almost lost. You know how this goes ya’ll…..somebody is big mad that Khavari is young and gettin’ it.

Renee’ wrote the reality of what happens when people’s backs are against the wall, and they don’t want to wait for “better” to come. I love that she didn’t make things simple, and give a fairy tale ending. While I would have loved for Khavari to go to college, she was realistic, and had him make the young, dumb decision to want to be a boss in the streets.  His mother did all that she could, but at the end of the day, the thought of fast money consumed him, and once he got a taste of the good life, it was a wrap.

Yazmin and Chevy by Taylor B.

Hey Hey Hey!

Back at it again with another review.  Today’s book is Yazmin and Chevy: Can’t Live Without His Hood Love by Taylor B.

There’s multiple couples in the story; Trenay and Legend, Blue/Rico/”Coke”, Evon and Smoke, Tuesday and Meek, and finally, Yazmin and Chevy.

Let’s start with Trenay and Legend. They’ve been together a little over a year, and everything could be great between them if Legend would just open up to her. She feels like getting him to talk about his family (or anything else for that matter) is like pulling teeth…but Trenay also has a secret of her own, and someone is blackmailing her with this piece of information, causing Legend to suspect that she’s stepping out on the relationship. Of course, because of this misunderstanding and not communicating with each other, the relationship fails, and Trenay finds herself wondering if she wants Legend because of the time invested, or if she wants her new lover because he’s what she wanted Legend to be.

Blue and Rico are no good for each other. Blue loves him, but he loves what she can do for him. Being the bad bitch she is, she makes a killing dancing. Rico is the definition of a trifling ass dude. He has a baby mama that he’s still fooling with, AND she’s expecting again, and Blue finds this out on Instagram. Where they do that at? Not only does she find out that he’s about to have another baby, she finds out that the son he has is almost 3 instead of 1. He previously told Blue that he cheated a year ago and got the girl pregnant. Sigh…they just one big mess.

But anways.

She confronts him with this information, and instead of acting like a man, he lashes out and beats her ass. That’s the final straw, and her new man “Coke” won’t just stand by and watch her go back to him…but the gag is she don’t want to anyway. “Coke” is the one she really wants to be with….but the other gag is…he’s married. HA!

Next is Evon and Smoke. For most of the book, they seem like the perfect couple. They get along fine, they are about to get married…they are pretty much relationship goals. Until they actually get married.  After their honeymoon, she gets served with papers about a chick named Dallas petitioning for child support from Smoke. Boom. But Robyn..Did Smoke know about this child? How old is the child?  You just gon’ have to read my boos. I’m giving away too much as it is.

Finally, Yazmin and Chevy. They’ve been friends since they were kids…always had each others’ backs..he took care of her when her mother wouldn’t. They’ve always been close. Everybody in their crew has been anticipating them getting together, but of course, they play it off like friends is all they will ever be. She even keeps his daughter for him when he’s out handling his business. (Who the child’s mother is, is a mess too, but…read the book) It’s not until she goes on a date with Los that Chevy wants to stop frontin’ and make her his. And he does just that. He literally drags her out of her date caveman style ya’ll….and they’ve been inseperable ever since.

Now that I’ve given ya’ll a run down, let me tell you what my issue is with this book. It’s titled Yazmin and Chevy, but I feel that I know more about everybody else and their drama..more than I know about these two. They popped in and out so much, I forgot what the book was supposed to be about. I would have definitely liked the book more if it was more centered around Yazmin and Chevy. I get that everybody was placed in the book because of the connection and added drama, but I was starting to lose focus on who I was to pay attention to.

Oh, and before ya’ll get jazzy with me because I didn’t mention Tuesday and Meek…it’s because of the fact they tie in with another person I’ve mentioned, and I don’t wanna spill all that tea…and the gag is…there’s a part 2 and 3.

Pretty Lips That Thugs Love

Hey Ya’ll. Back again with another review!

Today’s book was Pretty Lips That Thugs Love by Twyla T.

The book starts off with the main characters: 18 year old soon to be college bound Ashanti McNeal and 23 year old Kentay Mills. Kentay is the type of guy that your mother warns you about; charming, cute, has money, but can’t stay faithful to save his life. All he knows is the streets, and he likes to use that as an excuse as to why he’s not around like he should be. He knows this, but he doesn’t want to let Ashanti go, and she doesn’t know HOW to let him go, because she’s that stu…er..in love.

Like most women in these books, she’s a damn fool. Kentay can sweet talk her, and buy her something, take her on a trip, and she’s okay again.  I’m gonna just chalk that up to the fact that she’s young, but still…she’s stupid. There’s a few women that he seems to mess with, even one in particular that he KNOWS should be off limits, but does it anyway, for months, and it comes back to bite him in the ass in a major way. Even this isn’t enough for Ashanti to be done!

If that isn’t enough drama for you, Ashanti goes off to Mississippi State; cue in heartthrob basketball player Ahmad Jones. 20 years old, destined for the NBA, got all the females wanting him, but he seems to have an eye for Ashanti. They start off as friends, and eventually he wants to be more. He does everything Kentay doesn’t, and there are multiple times he is there for Ashanti when it should be Kentay.

There’s one scene in the book where Ashanti goes into labor, and she calls Kentay multiple times, and this dude doesn’t answer any of her calls…he’s not laid up with a female this time….his ass is in Puerto Rico. LMAO! I got mad like he was MY man.  This is a royal fuck up on Kentay’s part, and Ashanti starts to pull away from him, and he notices, and tries to make an effort to be there more. He even takes her on a trip to Vegas before his birthday, and things seem to be back on track after that.

Towards the end, however,  Ashanti is still having a tough time deciding whether or not she wants to give Ahmad a try, or keep dealing with Kentay’s trifling ass. It all comes to a head when she goes to New York for Ahmad’s game, in which she told Kentay she was going out of town for a girls’ trip..somehow Kentay finds the real reason she is in NY, and all hell breaks loose. Not just because of Ashanti, but because someone has left Kentay a nice little gift on his porch…AND it is revealed that Ahmad and Kentay have more than the love of Ashanti in common. She hit me with some soap opera drama ya’ll.

I’m SO ready to read part 2 to find out what happens! I wonder who Ashanti will pick (#TeamAhmad), and how Kentay is going to handle his problems. I found myself very involved in this book. LOL All in all, it was a great read and I recommend it, especially if you like multiple characters that carry their own form of drama. It’s really a lot going on, but not so much that you get lost. I didn’t touch on a few of the characters because I TRY not to tell you the whole story. I want you guys to readdddd with me.

If It’s Meant to Be: Review

Hey Hey Hey!!

Super late on this review, due to me not feeling well, so I’m a little off schedule. We’ll be back right soon.

Next book up for review is If It’s Meant to Be: A Black Scorpion Novel by Authoress Demettrea.

(This is a sequel to the book Black Scorpion, so read that first if you want the background. It’s 99 cents on Amazon/Kindle/Kindle App.)

This book is about 2 couples: Reign & Sincere, and Lorenzo & Shalia. Reign and Sincere have a child together, are in love, but for some reason, they just can’t get it right! Sincere is dating another woman, but wants Reign by any means. He’s willing to leave his chick alone in exchange for Reign’s heart, but she’s not trying to hear that because of all the many times they have tried to be together.

It was really frustrating reading these two honestly, because it’s a situation where it could have been simple, but Sincere keeps messing up, and he does this because he knows Reign isn’t going anywhere. Which is another thing that got on my damn nerves…I know sometimes us women are a fool for men, but there’s no way in hell I’m gonna continue to be weak for a man who claims he wants me but is in a WHOLE relationship.

I swear I rolled my eyes a million times throughout this book. I’m STILL rolling my eyes.

But back to the review.

Next is Lorenzo and Shalia. Lorenzo is Sincere’s best friend, and he is in love with his childhood friend Shalia. She left town seven years ago, but he is still holding on to her. He won’t even date another woman. Shalia eventually comes back to get away from an ex, and runs back to the one person she knows will protect her. Of course, he welcomes her back and expects everything to be how it was all those years ago, but she doesn’t trust it can work…because like Sincere, he makes dumb decisions that come back to bite him in the ass.

This book has a lot of back and forth between the couples…Shalia and Reign are so in love that they are constantly battling with themselves on whether they should continue to try their hand at love, or leave it alone altogether.  In the end, one lady keeps her man, and the other moves on to another, better version of the one she had.

There was a little mini drama in the beginning of the book, but honestly it happened SO fast, I forgot about it until I started typing this review. And there is a twist at the end that I kinda was expecting, because I knew it was written too easy for that relationship to end. 🙂 It definitely leaves an opening for another part.

All in all, it was an okay read. Damn near everybody in the book seriously got on my nerves….but that’s good writing if you can make me dislike people who aren’t even real. HAHA!

Sweeter Than Our First Kiss: Review

Hi Dolls!

Back at you with another review before I start studying. The second book of the week is titled Sweeter Than Our First Kiss: A Thug’s Passion by Ro. J.

It starts off with couple Unique and ‘Diesel’; been together 2 years and they are so in love, it’s disgusting. LOL Diesel is in LOVE with Unique ya’ll. That is his queen and there is nothing that he wouldn’t do for her. He’s out there making big moves with a couple of guys he calls family, so that they all can eat.  After all, he has Unique and his sister Showtime to look after.

Unique is just as much as in love with Diesel as he is with her. She’s his true ride or die chick. She’s not your typical “I’m gonna lay up all day while my man hustles to take care of me”. Nope.  Unique has her own dreams of opening up her salon, Unique Styles.

Unfortunately, things take a turn for the worse during a special night Diesel has set up for his Queen, and he ends up getting shot. Like the previous story I reviewed, Unique is devestated, and she’s having a hard time moving on…until she meets DJ six months later. She sees something in him that reminds her of Diesel, and obviously it’s a struggle deciding if it’s too soon to give love another try.

There’s another character in the book who looks at Unique as his Queen as well….Jody’s dusty ass. He is infatuated with Unique and won’t stop trying until he gets her. He sees himself as the one that should have had her first, and shows you that nobody in the game is loyal. I hated his character with a passion…You know your writing is on point if you can make the reader hate or love a character!

Halfway through the book, there is a shock factor, and BABAYYYYY it threw me for a loop, because I wasn’t expecting it at all. I literally had to go back and re-read the part to make sure I was reading it right. And if I tell you what it is, there is no point in you reading for yourself….but trust me…I’m a professional reader…it’s a good one. HAHAHA

All in all, I really enjoyed this book. I stayed up all night just so I could finish it, and ended up passing out when I only had 12 pages left (Boo!) This was amazing for it to be her first book.

So go check it out, and let me know what you think. It’s available for free with Kindle Unlimited and only 99 cents if you don’t have KU! 99 CENTS!

(Also, don’t forget to follow Roshonda Jenkins so you can be the first to know when part 2 is coming…she got me all ready…I was mad as hell when the book ended and I saw that “to be continued”)

Your Heart For Mine: Review

Hi Dolls!

Whew. Time for my first book review.  I figured that this would be right up my alley since I’m always reading anyway, and this is a perfect way for me to connect with these amazing authors! Hopefully you will find some good reads from this.

First book of the week is “Your Heart For Mine” by Authoress Avalon Scott.  If you don’t have a Kindle Unlimited subscription, it’s free for a limited time, so GRAB IT, GRAB IT, GRAB IT!!!

The book is about a woman named Egypt Summers, an ER nurse with an exceptionally brillant 5 year old by the name of DJ (Darien Jr.) Seriously ya’ll…he’s smarter than your average 5 year old. I sometimes forgot this was a little kid in the story because he spoke like an adult.

But anyways Robyn, back to the point.

Life for her is wonderful until her boyfriend Darien, commits suicide. Naturally, this is extremely traumatizing for both her and DJ, and she is having a hard time coping until the anniversary of his death, when he comes to her in a dream and tells her she needs to open her heart to love again. She takes heed to this and decides to see a therapist.

This particular action sets the scene for how she ends up meeting successful businessman, Akeem Benoit. The interesting thing about them meeting, is that he tries to avoid her…He gets creeped out by how they meet. Honestly, I would be creeped out too. I am being hella vague because I NEED you to read this book!

Obviously, from the name of the title, it’s a love story, with a little (a lot) of drama towards the end. Dealing with a mother who won’t let go, a mother that shouldn’t have let go, and a mother that’s money hungry by any means necessary.  Once you read it, you will know whose mother belongs with each character.

The drama that’s thrown in there kinda threw me for a loop, but I also expected it to happen just for the fact that even though Darien killed himself, he made sure Egypt and his son was taken care of .  And somebody is hella bitter about that. Thanks Avalon, because I really hated Delores with a passion while I was reading!

It’s one of those stories where there’s multiple signs that a person is the one for you, and it’s up for you to decide whether you want to take those signs and love again, or run and be miserable. I really enjoyed reading the book because it had the right amount of romance, sex, and drama. I didn’t get bored reading it. It just took me forever to read because my son senses when I’m trying to do something, and wants all the attention.

So please, click on the link and grab this book! You won’t be disappointed!

(Also, make sure that you follow Authoress Avalon on FB to keep in touch and catch when she releases another banger)

Books, Books, and MORE Books!

Hi Dolls!

I’m super excited right now! I wish you could see my face, but I took Kitron off, and all I have on is this bonnet. Not a good look.

But anyway…that’s neither here nor there.

I’m doing book reviews from some talented black authors. Male and female. We don’t discriminate around chea! Some of ya’ll waiting to see celebs who pay you no mind, but me…ME….just being acknowledged by these authors got me geeked!

I plan on doing 2-3 reviews a week, but I’m so excited…it might be more.  Some of them I have read before, but they were SO good, I don’t mind reading them again. (for real)

I’m not getting paid for this…so I’m not blowing smoke when I tell you a book is good. I’m just an avid reader, AND I believe in the power of reading. I am so proud and inspired by every single one of these authors. Reading their books got me through my graveyard shift at my old job. I would go through 2 books easily a DAY at work. These days, it takes me just a little bit longer due to handling a baby…but it hasn’t slowed me down too much.

I hope you guys find some new authors/good reads…come back and tell me what you think when you do.
